Gallery See
The SCAD exhibitions department presents “Six in One: SCAD in New American Paintings,” a group exhibition featuring work by alumni whose national exposure has put them at the forefront of current painting practices. The six artists on view in this exhibition—which will be displayed concurrently at the Atlanta and Savannah locations—were recently featured in the 88th edition of “New American Paintings,” the acclaimed juried exhibition-in-print journal. Artists include Misty Bennett (B.F.A., painting, 1996), Caomin Xie (M.F.A., painting, 2001), Meredith Pardue (B.F.A., painting, 1998), M.F.A. painting student Michael Porten (B.F.A., illustration, 2004), Katherine Sandoz (M.F.A., painting, 2005; M.F.A., illustration, 1997), and Chris Scarborough (B.F.A., illustration, 2000). Free and open to the public, this exhibition is part of the 2011 deFINE ART program. Ongoing Andreas Kocks: “Momentary Suspension”
Trois Gallery
The SCAD exhibitions department presents “Momentary Suspension,” a solo show featuring a site-specific cut-paper installation as well as watercolors and two-dimensional studies by internationally renowned artist Andreas Kocks. The show exemplifies the frozen moments captured in his acclaimed “paperworks” that suspend dynamically from the gallery walls. The activity of the imagery—like paint splattering off the wall—visually belies the artist’s careful process of siting the piece in architectural space. Free and open to the public, this exhibition is part of the 2011 deFINE ART program.
7 p.m. Sarah Thornton Lecture: “Seven Days in the Art World…and Counting”
Arnold Hall Auditorium
“Seven Days in the Art World” is a funny series of nonfiction narratives that reveal the inner workings of the institutions that contribute to an artist’s place in art history. Since finishing her book, Thornton has continued to travel and research, exploring the lives of artists and the dynamics of the art market in many different countries. In this talk, she will explore the diverse subcultures that share a belief in contemporary art. Free and open to the public, this event is part of the 2011 deFINE ART program. Ongoing “The Spirituality of Place”
Gutstein Gallery
The Spirituality of Place” focuses on internationally acclaimed artists working in a variety of media who explore the sense, spirit and memory of place and reinterpret it poetically through their art. Locating the spiritual in the urban and natural worlds, artists in this exhibition create works that ultimately invite the viewer to have a contemplative, and in some cases interactive, experience with their findings. Participating artists include Mark Bradford, Andy Goldsworthy, Mona Hatoum, Kimsooja, Yoko Ono and Do Ho Suh. Free and open to the public, this exhibition is held in conjunction with the SCAD Architectural History Symposium “The Spirituality of Place” and the 2011 deFINE ART program. Ongoing Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: “Pulse Spiral”
Pei Ling Chan Gallery
The SCAD exhibitions department presents “Pulse Spiral,” an installation by artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. “Pulse Spiral” features an immense hanging sculpture composed of hundreds of light bulbs that illuminate the gallery by responding to visitors’ heartbeats. As is signature of Lozano-Hemmer’s work, this spectacular piece links technology, often considered cold and impersonal, to an unexpectedly joyful, personal and even spiritual experience. Free and open to the public, this exhibition is part of the 2011 deFINE ART program. Ongoing “Tilting the Lens: A SCAD Documentation of Sham Shui Po”
Hall Street Gallery
The SCAD exhibitions and photography departments present “Tilting the Lens: A SCAD Documentation of Sham Shui Po.” This exhibition showcases selections from the School of Fine Arts student photography project that explores and documents the quickly transforming Sham Shui Po neighborhood of Hong Kong, home to SCAD’s newest location. Fahm Hall
sisyphus happy” is a thesis exhibition by M.F.A. painting student Michael Porten. In a series of self-portraits, Porten incorporates colorful, pseudo-pop and op art patterns, everyday visual imagery and signs as design and concept motifs. These works explore the idea of the self in the context of the absurd condition—that we have a desire for meaning in a seemingly meaningless world. Finding meaning then becomes a creative act, which requires a leap of faith from the skeptical world of the absurd man. Free and open to the public, this exhibition is part of the 2011 deFINE ART program.
