On March 2, installation artist Pae White came to the DMC to speak to students about her work. Her slide show presentation showcased her ability to use materials like string, paper, glass, stone and wood. White said she likes found objects such as birdcages as well as items from nature such as rocks and leaves.
White resides in Los Angeles and rarely finds the time to sit still as she travels throughout the world setting up her installations. From Germany to Canada, England to New Zealand, White has spent over 20 years successfully exhibiting her “site specific” installations. Since receiving her M.F.A. at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., White has launched close to 50 solo exhibitions. Some years White has held 4-5 exhibitions, an astounding amount of work for one year, especially since most of her projects are large in scale and require precise measuring.
Most of White’s artwork is bright and colorful and she plays with the effects of light and shadow. While at SCAD Atlanta, White encouraged students to not ignore unfamiliar materials, but to learn about them. White’s art can serve as an inspiration to students who want to rework common materials, especially if they are interested in color, light/shadow, sculpture and installations.
