“Keep calm and eat cupcakes.”

This is the reassuring mantra customers see when purchasing the delights at the Cookie Studio in Decatur.  While many are growing to think of Decatur in terms of the square, there’s plenty to enjoy in the surrounding area.  Including Barbara O’Neill’s studio for her baking artistry.  As opposed to naming it a bakery, “studio” implies that artistry is involved.  One taste of the Studio’s creations is all the confirmation necessary to know that Mrs. O’Neill is indeed an artist when it comes to baked goods.  It is no wonder that this same woman has a son who is also a creative, attending SCAD in Savannah.

I initially met Barbara O’Neill while at the Peachtree Road Farmers Market during the summer.  She was both approachable and friendly, happy to talk about my photography and my studies at SCAD.  I found her own story far more engaging, though.  Prior to moving to Atlanta in 1996, O’Neill had been the director of information systems for a law firm in New York.  Though she could have easily found full-time employment in her field after moving, she felt doing so would limit the time available to her son during his formative years.  Instead, she volunteered her expertise in information systems for the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children, providing them with ongoing computer support.  This not only gave her time for her son but fostered her connection with the shelter.  Eventually, she turned her baking artistry into the Cookie Studio in 2005.

She was as gracious when I stopped in for a surprise visit as she had been on our first meeting, introducing me to the staff and answering my questions.  Patrons can see the process as it unfolds behind the counter, which is quietly reassuring, as is the ability to connect with the friendly staff.  The Cookie Studio uses all-natural ingredients without preservatives or additives, offering everything from cookies to cupcakes to brownies and dessert platters.

The Culinary Tourist will return to The Cookie Studio soon and often.  Not only to support a locally owned business or one owned by a SCAD parent but also because Barbara O’Neill continues to support the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children.  As stated in the Cookie Studio’s logo (“Cookies With A Cause”) a portion from her proceeds financially support the shelter.

Doesn’t that make those cookies even sweeter?
