SCAD students dominate at Piedmont Park Art Throwdown
The SCAD Atlanta Marksmen Drawing Club competed in the Art Throwdown at Piedmont Park for the second year in a row this past Saturday.
The Dogwood Festival Art Throwdown, sponsored by the Atlanta High School Art Exhibition, was originally founded as an event for local high school students. For the past two years, competitors from SCAD and the Art Institute of Atlanta have worked with organizer Cheryl Myrbo to establish a college division for the challenges. “Hopefully we’ve set the precedent to have the college category from here on out at the Dogwood Festival Throwdown,” said Ryan Imm, third-year animation student and president of the Marksmen Drawing Club.
SCAD students Ryan Imm, Aaron Ware, Maneen Mehta, Shravani Kulkarni, Alex Sellati, Kassidy Evans, Karen Chu and Masha Zhdanova competed against students from the Art Institute of Atlanta and Georgia State University. The competition catagories included figure drawing, landscape drawing and clay maquette sculpting.
Chu took first place in portrait and live model drawing, and Imm placed second in live model drawing. “It was exhilarating to compete against other schools but also satisfying to see and hear crowds of strangers get engrossed in watching the competitions,” said Chu, a third-year animation student and secretary of the club.
Mehta placed first in the maquette clay sculpting challenge for a bust of the Marvel character Wolverine. Zhdanova placed first in the landscape drawing challenge for drawing the international stage of the Piedmont Park Dogwood Festival. Sellati placed second in the poster design challenge for creating a poster on the theme of gun control.
“We had a great time competing with the Art Institute for the second year in a row,” said Imm. “Thanks to everyone that joined us for this awesome event!”
The Marksmen Drawing Club is open to all SCAD Atlanta students. If you’re interested in joining, meetings are held every Friday at 10 a.m. in SCAD Atlanta room 373.
