Roles have changed, and social media seems to dictate the trends– it all comes down to how long they last

As soon as designers and brands come out with a trend that is turned commercial, it’s quick to filter into influencers’ social media accounts, as seen with Instagram.

These days, the fashion community has taken over Instagram, not just through influencer or brand accounts, but with the induction of a system that allows for shopping for various products without leaving the app.

It seems social media’s current champion is the padded headband — invented several generations ago and regained popularity on Prada’s Spring 2019 show. During this show, creative director Miuccia Prada brought them back into her designs.

The padded headbands came down the Prada runway accompanied with various looks to choose from, showing easy adaptability of the trend. They were paired with baby-doll dresses, bermudas, coats and even tight clothing.

There was no doubt that with their shiny, silk fabrics, prints and embellishments, this accessory would cause so much commotion that since the spring season until a few weeks ago, has been used.

But have you thought about checking out your favorite influencer’s latest posts, do you see them wearing it? New York Fashion Week just happened and from the street style images and runway images, were you be able to spot them?

One notices the obsession on Instagram and as soon as the trend is validated and ready to be approached by the rest of the fashion community, it starts to fade away. Can it be that it doesn’t handle the trend being outside social media?

Instagram and other social media platforms seem to limit the trends for just influencers and their posts. Fourth-year fashion student Mariana Rodriguez said, “I think that the padded headbands are very retro elegant. I liked seeing how actress Yalitza Aparicio used one for the Michael Kors runway. They are very chic and it’s definitely a trend for every type of woman.”

In order to maintain the trends running for a while, their role on social media platforms should be limited in order to avoid a quick disappearance.
