So you don’t have a Scanner?
Participants explore different tools and their settings in Adobe Photoshop and Clip Studio in order to submit better quality images to professors during virtual learning and beyond. Participants also discuss best practices for sending work to a server for future professional practice. The following goals articulate the general objectives and purpose of this workshop: identify problems within the submitted work, identify solutions to the problems via a variety of “cleaning” techniques, become familiar with software tools, tips and tricks, become familiar with industry standards for file management and sharing.

The workshop will showcase student projects that have been developed to allow for students to bring in their personal experiences and culture and align with the class learning objectives.

Composition Rule in Art
Join Director of Fine Art, Thomas Dang Vu, to learn how to make compositional choices based on The Rule of Thirds and The Golden Ratio Rule. This will help students arranging the elements to guide the viewer’s eyes to explore concepts and subjects in the artwork.

The Wee Box: Constructing a Custom Tiny Box with a Lid
Join Foundation Studies professor and book conservator Margot Ecke as she takes you through the process of making a custom box with a lid. Students will watch as a box is made from start to finish using book board, decorative paper and glue. Different construction solutions, such as box divisions and box drawers, will be discussed. Students will receive step by step instructions and a full materials list.

Fantastical Environments
Utilizing digital painting techniques and the principles of linear and atmospheric perspective, students will combine source images from reality with invented environments to create newly imagined worlds.

Join Professor Orear for a cross-disciplinary presentation on how to anticipate and manipulate where our viewer or audience’s eyes will go when presented with our images.

Introduction to Soft Pastel
Join Director of Fine Art, Thomas Dang Vu, to learn how to blend and mix dry pigments together using various techniques. In this workshop, students will learn to understand their materials as well as choose the right surface and paper selection for soft pastels.

Winter Break Color Palette Challenge on Instagram
Participants will collect and organize color palettes from images they take using Illustrator, Procreate, Photoshop, or other digital programs. The goal is to gather and create color palettes while analyzing various color schemes. As each palette is completed, students can tag and post their images and palettes to the SCAD Foundations Atlanta Campus Instagram @scadfoundations.atlanta for viewers to like and “vote” on their favorite color palettes in the tagged photos section. The top liked photos will be featured in the stories and feed at the end of the week!

Scientific Creature Creation
In this workshop, attendees will learn how to design their own alien creature by first analyzing a real animal, it’s anatomy, behavior, adaptations, and how these aspects make it successful in its Earthly habitat. Attendees will then apply the same principles of the Theory of Evolution to design an imagined creature shaped by the need to survive on their alien world.

Introduction to Colored Pencils
Join Director of Fine Art, Thomas Dang Vu, to learn about Prismacolors-Artist colored pencils which are rich in wax and pigments. The pigment in these pencils create a full luster palette and can easily be compared to the depth and richness in oil paintings. They can be sharpened to a fine point which allows for exquisite detail. Building a delicate layers technique will give a deep and luminescent color result.

Designer Christina Yother shares her strategies and techniques with using CLO 3D design software for fashion design. Christina graduated from SCAD in 2017 and is currently an Associate Designer with Carters, Inc.
