Kamille Caldwell: An icon behind and in front of the lens
Contemplating inspiration for photoshoots can be quite daunting without understanding the true purpose behind it. At various times you can feel the pressure build as you scroll through social media looking for the perfect angle and location. Fortunately for one SCAD student, limitations don’t exist, especially when you’re gifted behind and in front of the camera.
Meet Kamille Caldwell, a first-year film and television student with a passion for photography.
Caldwell grasped the inspiration for this shoot from Playboi Carti’s most recent project, “Whole Lotta Red.” This features multiple songs that represent his transition as a musical artist. Kamille identifies her alter ego with his music and decided to create images based around that aspect entirely.
“What actually inspired me to do this shoot was the ‘Whole Lotta Red’ album by Playboi Carti. I’ve been listening to it ever since it came out on Christmas and when my birthday came around the corner, I knew that I wanted to show out. I’ve been really in tune with my alter ego lately and the album resonates with my alter ego a lot. So after picking out a fire outfit, my friends and I executed this shoot and I definitely think it’s for the books.”
All photos were taken in the Forty residence in SCAD Atlanta.
Kamille’s images feature a variety of poses centered around an innocent façade coinciding with her unyielding alter ego. The contrasting hues of red blend perfectly with the crimson colored stairs in the last image, while the green wall behind her in the Forty laundry room makes her the star-gazing focal point. What makes these images truly successful is her ability to utilize the scene around her without being awkward. Many photos taken in residence halls tend to feature a simple peace sign, hip lean and duck lips. However, Caldwell has taken residence portraits to the next level by pushing location limitations, gearing her photography skills in the future towards editorial.
Not only did she deliver for her self-portriats, but she is also the owner of Celestial Photography and is looking to collaborate with other models, photographers to create indelible art.
