Costume design through the Black lens: A Ruth E. Carter exhibit
Afrofuturism is a cultural aesthetic that provides an adventure into African diaspora and technology. It exudes a deep exploration into the philosophy of science, government and history, through the Black lens. This concept can oftentimes be difficult to execute without having a strong cultural inclination. Fortunately however, Ruth E. Carter divulged her many costume concepts from popular movies such as Black Panther, The Butler, Selma, etc.
This exhibit, located located in the SCAD Atlanta fashion museum features the original costumes from Black Panther, including the Black Panther suit, Ramonda’s ceremonial outfit worn by Angela Basset and Killmonger’s outfit that Michael B. Jordan wore during the museum scene.
Not only does the exhibit feature the original costumes from Black Panther, but Carter also unveiled the concepts from the movie Selma and the talented, SCAD Fashion curators collaborated with more of a personal touch for the girls involved in the Birmingham church bombing and the Edmund Pettus Bridge that John Lewis walked across every year before his unfortunate passing.
This exhibit is accessible to the public by reservation through the SCAD Fashion website. If you’d like to attain tickets to view the Ruth. E Carter exhibit and her mesmerizing costume designs, then click here
