The “Butterfly Effect” is the idea that small things can have non-linear impacts on a complex system. These small actions can create unpredictable changes that’ll shift the direction of any aspect. Of course, we can compare this to the domino effect, but in this case, Jaylon Smith, a SCAD Atlanta alumnus, is looking at the phrase with a unique lens.
The name of this project is “The Butterfly Effect,” and was taken in the SCAD Atlanta photography studio.
When asked what inspired this shoot, Smith said:
“The name of the series is ‘The Butterfly Effect.’ It explorers the evolution of blossoming African-American women coming out of their metaphorical cocoon. Once the cocoon breaks, the women flourish to make an enormous impact on their community.”
The photoshoot was in partnership with Shwetha Anand Designs for a collection she designed while studying textile and fashion design at SCAD. Subsequently, Smith had the idea of reconstructing the photographs to add to his “The Butterfly Effect” series.
Michael O’Brien, the associate chair of photography at SCAD Atlanta was astonished by the vibrant hues and included the series in SCAD’s “Rebel Rebel” photo exhibition. The exhibition was in partnership with Atlanta Celebrates Photography (ACP) and was on display at SCAD’s Atlanta and Savannah galleries.
