IDUS Shop Certification Practicum II: Sanders and Chop Saw

The second of a three-part series, students will be introduced to shop safety policies and procedures at SCAD Studio. For Part II, students will learn the proper technique for the operation of all shop sanders and the chop saw. Students are required to read the corresponding section in the attached SCAD Studio Shop Safety Manual prior to the start of the workshop. A hands-on demonstration by students will be part of the session. Capture the Human Form: Life Drawing
Friday, April 23, 1-3 p.m.
Students will learn a crucial step in figure drawing, the understanding of the anatomy of the human form. Capture the full essence of the human body and translate it through the use of lines and sight measurement. This workshop is great for students in all majors and designed for students majoring in fashion, animation and sequential arts. Supplies needed by participants: newsprint pad (12X16, 18X24, or 24X36),  measuring stick, conte crayons, willow charcoals, charcoal pencils, kneaded rubber erasers and white erasers. Click here to register.

Playful Modernist Design: The Noguchi Playscape at Piedmont Park

Explore the only Playscape designed by artist Isamu Noguchi and constructed during his lifetime. Learn about Noguchi’s work and the history of the park in Atlanta from art history professor Alex Tunstall. Serving as a public playground in Atlanta since 1976, this element of Piedmont Park incorporates Modernist ideas of design into a recreational space. Students will draw, photograph, explore, and pull inspiration from the sculptural elements of the playscape and the spaces they create. Waxworks: Learning the Art of Photo Encaustic Mixed Media Painting
Friday, April 23, 4-6 p.m.
In this workshop, students will learn about encaustic painting, a centuries old process that typically involves painting with hot wax and pigment. Encaustic painting has enjoyed many revivals throughout art history, including with the Pop Art works of Jasper Johns, and remains a viable contemporary practice to the present day. The hands-on part of the workshop will involve mounting previously printed black-and-white digital photo prints to a wood panel, covering them with a thin layer of tinted wax, and completing the piece with glazes of oil paint. Click here to register.
