Due to the ongoing pandemic, we would expect the spring/summer 2021 trends to be similar to our 2020 uniform of sweatpants and unbrushed hair. However, with the vaccines beginning to be distributed and restrictions slowly lifting, fashion followers are desperate to bring some fun back into their lives after the exhausting and confusing year we all experienced. We can now predict 2021 summer trends to be bold, colorful and like nothing we have ever seen before.

’70s Maximalist Prints

To start, we are all well aware of fashion constantly repeating itself, which is why I have found that ’70s-inspired maximalist prints are all anyone can talk about for summer. These prints consist of bright monochromatic or complementary color schemes, accompanied by modern silhouettes. The mix of organic shapes with iconic florals, checkers, or text could leave even an extreme minimalist in awe. I can see these prints hitting every market, from swimwear to shoes, as these funky prints are guaranteed to give that extra boost of serotonin we all need.

Colorful “Tacky” Jewelry

Don’t worry, the fun does not stop there. For summer 2021, the accessories market is taking tacky and transforming it into chic. This is partially due to the Millennial and Gen Z community needing to relive their childhoods. We can see gumball-machine plastic rings and colorful beaded necklaces being brought back from the dead and becoming the highlight of the season. Every brand from big to small is taking up on this fresh movement by creating funky beaded necklaces and plastic rings unique to their brand’s aesthetic. However, the reason this trend is so special is that it is attainable for everyone. Many fashion followers have learned to DIY the jewelry through their local craft stores, which now allows each trendsetters’ jewelry to be completely unique to their own personal style, thus making the colorful jewelry a trend everyone wants and is able to be a part of.

Crochet

This last trend is one no one expected but is quickly spreading amongst the fashion community: the rebirth of crochet. I think we all can agree that we owe our grandmas an apology for never wanting to wear the sweaters she would make, now that we are so desperate to get our hands on similar items. Crochet apparel and accessories have blossomed into a must-have summer 2021 item, as crochet has proven its beauty to us. Due to the endless possibilities of bold colors, unique prints, and new silhouettes crochet can offer, you can see this trend fitting into every brand or customer’s aesthetic. If you are wanting to take part in this trend but do not plan on learning to crochet yourself, you will soon find crochet pieces in most of your favorite retail stores or small businesses.

Overall, for summer 2021, we can expect to see some of the most fun and one-of-a-kind fashion pieces to date. This will be the summer where all fashion rules can be broken, so take this opportunity to express yourself and show off your full style potential.
