The Culinary Tourist tries to be fair, but sometimes one has to play favorites. Growing up in Memphis, TN has made me something of a barbecue snob. In the spirit of culinary snobbery, I enlisted the assistance of Jordan Bailey: a beer snob. The goal was delicious beer brewed locally, heart-stopping burgers and barbecue that makes you want to go to hog heaven. This is part one.

Red Brick’s Brick Mason Wee Heavy Ale’s smoky, malty flavor makes for the perfect accompaniment to Augustine’s Blue Pig Burger. The Wee Heavy Ale pours dark amber and has the feel of svelte wheat. It’s built to taste with red meats and savory meals– pairing well with the saltiness of shoe string French fries and bacon on a thick burger. Bleu cheese crumbles add dimension to the burger, garnished with tomato, lettuce on a lightly toasted bun.
Neither for the faint of heart nor the calorie counters; this pair is for the foodies who want bold flavors and a food coma within 15 minutes.
Augustine’s is located in Grant Park at 327 Memorial Drive, Atlanta, GA 30312. For more information, call 404.681.3344 or visit
