Designer profile: Desiree Djaba
Meet the first-year fashion student
Inspired by large fashion houses Alexander Wang, Chanel, Alexander McQueen and Versace, first-year fashion student Desiree Djaba has made it her mission to conquer the fashion industry.
Djaba, known by her Instagram handle Dez Affiliated, started designing clothes when she was 17 years old. Now, the 19-year-old mogul-in-making has had her designs featured in fashion shows at The University at Buffalo, Savannah State University and Georgia Gwinnett College. Her rise to Instagram influencer fame has been rapid, with 108k followers perusing her posts. “I was born with the passion. I’ve been sketching and putting outfits together since i was seven,” she said.
The up-and-coming designer is known for her use of traditional African ankara prints. Her current collection is an assortment of prom and pageant gowns, bodycon dresses and tailored jackets.
When asked about the pros and cons of pursuing her dreams in the fashion industry, Djaba notes that the only con is how demanding the field is. “It’s all been a journey, just to see how much I’ve grown and things I’m able to make now. I pray to only get better and better from here,” she said. Djaba loves how eclectic the industry is and its fast-changing trends. She also believes there’s inclusivity in the field of fashion, contradictory to how most fashion designers feel.
Djaba is living proof that anything you put your mind to can be achieved. With only two years of professional experience, Djaba has achieved so much in such a short amount of time. “Fashion is just such an amazing means of expression,” she said. She advises aspiring designers to be themselves and channel their inner creativity. “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it! Stay inspired and stay consistent, and watch what happens.”
