The Connector interviews Ayannah Settle, a second-year film and television student from Los Angeles.
When did you start photography and what does it mean to you?
Ever since I can remember I’ve loved the idea of perspective. I was fascinated by not only my own perspective but other peoples as well. I got my first camera when I was 7 and I found that taking pictures was a great way to toy with perspective. Photography became my stepping stone towards my love of film.
Who or what inspires you?
When I shoot I search for a feeling, rather than looking for a subject . I like shooting things that have hidden stories and evoke an emotion from the viewer. Whenever I travel, I love capturing spontaneous sunsets and movements of water. Nature is my greatest inspiration.
How does SCAD help your creative process?
SCAD creates such an amazing environment that promotes creativity. Whenever I walk around campus I am constantly finding inspiring materials. I also come up with some of my best ideas while sitting in class at SCAD, most of my professors have been so inspiring that I just want to constantly create.
Do you have any advice for other artists?
If I could give one piece of advice to my fellow artists it would be to create things that tell your story. Your art should always be a part of you. It is easy to be inspired by someone else’s art and wants to create something similar, but the thing that makes your art unique is you.
What are your future goals?
I plan on pursuing directing in film. My goal is to tell stories that people can relate to and I ultimately want to bring a fresh perspective to film.
