When thinking about downloading the TikTok app, I never thought that I was going to get fashion inspiration. I wanted to be there only for people’s jokes and stories.

TikTok is just like Pinterest without boards and pins. One like on a fashion video that interests you, and your feed will slowly build up.

Currently, the most popular videos on my page are the ones about people showing off their modern and vintage fits and how they chose to wear certain popular apparel or accessories. At the moment, my feed includes fall fashion related items such as the sweater vests and mini bags, the hottest sneaker which right now is the Nike Blazer ’77, and a whole lot of thrifting and the best locations to make your purchase.

This content is tied to accounts with major following, which can either be verified influencers or otherwise. But the majority of these accounts are sharing their personal style, so in a way we’re all getting educated on styling and the many ways you can wear things you already own.

The thing that TikTok does better than Pinterest is variety. When you like a photo on Pinterest, the algorithm will find suggestions of images that look pretty much the same. But fashion needs more than repetition. Fashion needs variety. And TikTok gives it.

Another popular app for one discovering their sense of style is Instagram. But Instagram does not have a matching sense of education or inspiration — what it gives you instead, more often times than not, are new brands you might be interested in purchasing from. It’s more a catalogue than a showcase. There is inspiration, sure, but it is the inspiration to buy.

These three apps all serve different purposes in the fashion community, but t those seeking their sartorial selves, I have to recommend TikTok. With its videos, you get up close and personal. The people behind the accounts truly show you how it’s done.
