Think Ink
Heather Deyling, Professor of Foundation Studies
Using traditional and non-traditional materials, students will explore techniques to create a range of effects with ink washes. Required materials: India ink or acrylic ink, brushes, cup or jar for water, palette with wells or small cups or other containers for mixing ink washes, paper (such as mixed media or watercolor paper; paper from a mixed media sketchbook works well).

Fundamentals of a Still Life: Oil Painting Essentials
Thomas Dang Vu, Director of Fine Art
Learn about still life painting and how to focus on seeing shape rather than detail through personalized instruction. Use the combination of light and temperature to create drama and depth in and around the focal point. Beginning with a toned canvas, gain an awareness of palette choices and brush selection. Learn how to create an interesting composition, through an understanding of color coordination, harmony and values. Demonstrations throughout the workshop illustrate the basics of sight measuring, linear drawing, and color theory, as well as traditional oil painting techniques such as underpainting, alla prima, glazing, and fat over lean to render the still life artwork. Required materials: General’s Charcoal Pencil Set. 1 Pair of Wooden Chopsticks. Poly or Bristle Brushes Set for Oil Painting. Oil Paint: 1 Cadmium Red, 1 Cadmium Yellow, 1 Ultramarine, 1 Burnt Sienna, 1 Burnt Umber, 1 Titanium White. 1 Solvent: Natural Terpen Eco-Solvent. Cleaning Rags or Paper towels. 1 Paper Disposable Palette.

How Does this Font Make Me Look? The Psychology of Fonts

We have an amazing amount of influence in how a reader, a consumer of language, interprets our words. From logos to titles, advertising and branding, font plays a huge part in how people ‘interpret’ the words, even if they do not speak the language in which it’s written! In this one-hour course, you will see just how much we are ‘manipulated’ by fonts and how we too can use this psychology to influence how people see our logos, packaging, branding etc. Don’t think it’s true? Return to the Fold
Margot Ecke, Professor of Foundation Studies
This one-hour workshop will teach the basics of folded paper structures, from accordions to pamphlets to maze books and beyond. Each participant will receive pre-cut paper, a small cup of glue and a brush. Professor Margot Ecke will begin by explaining bookbinding tools and materials and then will guide students through the process of constructing and covering their own set of folded books. Each student will receive a pdf with photos and step-by-step instructions

The Magic of Photography without a Darkroom or a Camera: Lumen Printing

Lumen printing is a photographic process using light and light sensitive materials for creating images without a camera or a darkroom. This workshop will introduce participants to the history of this unique process and its resurgence within contemporary art practice. They will explore different techniques and options for creating images producing a minimum of two images.
