Summer is the time to let your melanin shine and gain a healthy summer glow. Laying out on the beach or deck for a nice tan may seem like a quick fix for the summer beauty trend, but protecting one’s skin is far more important. Here are a few tips and tricks to make sure your skin stays healthy and damage-free.

  1. Go SPF crazy.

The higher the SPF on your sunscreen the better. For makeup-wearers, many tinted moisturizers and foundations now come with at least SPF 15 so there is no excuse to skip the face. Even lip balms have SPF. Sunscreen wears off so reapply throughout the day to make sure skin stays protected. Don’t forget random areas like your feet, neck or ears.

  1. Keep skin hydrated.

Drinking lots of water is always important for supple and soft skin. In the summer, more moisture is exiting the body through sweat so try and increase your normal water intake.

  1. Wear protective clothing.

That coveted all-over tan isn’t worth risking the health of skin. Try covering up with light fabrics when you’re out catching “rays” like linen shirts, beach cover-ups or maybe a breezy pair of shorts/skirts.

  1. Tanning beds are so last season.

Tanning beds can put you at higher risk for skin cancer than regular sunlight exposure. If you want that desirable tan look try a spray tan or gradual tanning lotion like this one.
