All students must demonstrate math competency, either by successfully completing a math course or by passing the math competency exam during their first quarter of enrollment; Students who pass are allowed to substitute an approved science course for their math/science requirement. Visiting Artist Lecture Series: Nancy VanDevender, visual artist

VanDevender’s work has been exhibited extensively, nationally and internationally. In 2008 she installed “Pink, beyond black and white,” a solo exhibition at Emory University. VanDevender is a professor at Clark Atlanta University, a studio artist at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center and the founder of Black Market Projects.

Ivy Hall Writers Series: Rebecca Burns, author-journalist

Burns focuses on Southern history and the intersection of race, religion and politics. She is the author of “Rage in the Gate City: The Story of the 1906 Atlanta Race Riot, a finalist for the 2007 Georgia Author of the Year awards. Burns will discuss her most recent book, “Burial for a King: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Funeral and the Week that Transformed Atlanta and Rocked the Nation,” published by Scribner in January 2011.

Multicultural and Diversity Film Series: “Earth”

Based on Bapsi Sidhwa’s novel, “Cracking India,” the film centers on the division of India and Pakistan in 1947 and chronicles the destruction of innocence in the name of nationalism and religion. The violence of the time co-exists within a love story touched by betrayals of friendship. The film stars Aamir Khan, Nandita Das, Rahul Khanna and Maia Sethna.

Andreas Kocks Exhibition: “Momentary Suspension”

Trois Gallery, SCAD Atlanta

Kocks’s show features a site-specific cut-paper installation, as well as watercolors and two-dimensional studies. The show exemplifies the frozen moments captured in his acclaimed “paperworks” that suspend dynamically from the gallery walls. Appearing as splatters of paint tossed at the wall, the imagery visually belies the artist’s careful process of sitting the piece in architectural space.

Group Exhibition: “SCAD in New American Painting”

The six artists on view in this exhibition were recently featured in the 88th edition of “New American Paintings. Artists include Misty Bennett (B.F.A., painting, 1996), Caomin Xie (M.F.A., painting, 2001), Meredith Pardue (B.F.A., painting, 1998), M.F.A. painting student Michael Porten (B.F.A., illustration, 2004), Katherine Sandoz (M.F.A., painting, 2005; M.F.A., illustration, 1997), and Chris Scarborough (B.F.A., illustration, 2000).

JuYeon Kim Exhibition: “The In-Between”

The Savannah College of Art and Design and the National Museum of Women in the Arts present this exhibition featuring commissioned installations by artist JuYeon Kim. Created during Spring 2010 sculpture and fibers courses held at SCAD Savannah, the exhibition showcases two large-scale installations featuring thousands of figurative images presented in an astounding array of poses and circumstances.
