“The Connector” has come a long way. Our news site started out as one page in “District” in 2005. Then it became an insert in “District” in 2007, before finally becoming a full weekly print publication for SCAD Atlanta in 2007, just like many of the free newspapers you see in front of stores, restaurants and movie theaters throughout the city. After some time, our readership wanted to see a print magazine, something that could showcase student work in a different format, so “SCAN” magazine was born. In order to accommodate the kind of high-quality magazine student media wanted to produce, “The Connector” moved to being solely online in 2008.

Over the years, the student media staff and contributors have looked for new ways to articulate what happens here at SCAD Atlanta, in the lives of students and the people around us. We take our own ideas, combined with your feedback, and try to fulfill our mission: to serve as a proficient student-run media outlet for SCAD and to prepare for our future careers.

To walk into the newsroom at Spring House is to see that we’ve done a good job. Hung on our walls, and recorded in the rankings of various societies, associations and clubs, are the many awards that our staff and contributors have received. It’s pretty impressive to see.

It’s also an honor to be a part of that legacy of hard-working, young and talented writers, designers, photographers and illustrators who have shone a light on the great work that comes out of our university. We, like many of our fellow students and student organizations, have received regional and national recognition for the work we produce. You should be proud. I know I am.

So it is with great pleasure, and a lot of excitement, that I would like to acknowledge the new staff of “The Connector” and “SCAN” magazine. We have some big shoes to fill, but I believe we are up to the challenge.

“The Connector” and “SCAN” are already strong publications. My staff and I are here to continue that tradition and take it to the next level.

With “The Connector,” our goal is to make the news site an indispensable part of your university experience. Accordingly, we are going to make some changes. Look for a new design within the next few weeks, which will include a student portfolio showcase and a fashion section, to reflect one of our school’s largest majors. You’ll also meet all of our section editors via weekly opinion pieces similar to this. In “SCAN,” look for content that digs a little deeper into our habits and behaviors. We are interested in peeling back the layers to see what is really going on under there (wherever that may lead us).

We are all excited to do our best. We will strive to offer you informative and inspiring coverage on what affects SCAD Atlanta students and our surrounding community. We hope you enjoy what we have to share. It’s sure to be a fun ride.
