“I would rather be underdressed than overdressed,” said no one ever.

There’s something so liberating about putting together the perfect outfit: an outfit so fly that you find yourself wandering off to random places after your regularly scheduled program so that you can ensure everyone gets a glimpse of your look. We’re all guilty of it. Don’t feel bad though. It’s a proven fact that when you look good, you feel good. So why not always look good no matter the occasion?

American psychologist Adam D. Galinsky said, “Clothes invade the body and brain, putting the wearer into a different psychological state.” In addition to the psychological influence our clothes have on us, I think it’s very important to dress for the role you wish to have versus dressing for the role you already have. For example, you may not have a million bucks, but that doesn’t mean you can’t strive to look like money.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been deemed the overdressed friend— for any occasion. My commitment to serving consistent looks has allowed me to win the best dressed superlative, from middle school until my undergraduate days were over. “Why are you so dressed up, Charisma?”

My question is, why aren’t you?

Although science proves that clothes have an effect on our psychological processes, there are a few reasons why you should consider being more like the overdressed friend.

First, dress how you want to be addressed. If you want people to take you seriously, why not look the part? This applies to job interviews and everyday life. Would you show up to a job interview in sweatpants?

Second, you never know who you’ll meet. This is my absolute favorite reason why I strive to always look my best. You never know who you may run into, and you don’t get second chances at first impressions.

Third, it’s better to be overdressed for the occasion. What’s the harm in ensuring that you look good for the occasion? When you look good, you feel good. Every day should be treated like a special occasion.

Above all, the way you dress is a great form of self-expression. Your outfit is what speaks for you before you do. Before you even get the chance to make a first impression, your outfit speaks volumes. What do you want it to say?
