Living in Atlanta isn’t cheap. Whether you live on campus at SCAD or an apartment nearby, the dollars add up quickly. The list of expenses is long and sad, but one thing everyone needs to survive — and underestimates the cost of is — food. While the cliche college student diet of ramen noodles holds true for some, many love the experience of going to restaurants with friends — until the check comes. Dining out can be a guilty pleasure but it doesn’t have to break your bank. Here’s a list of the five cheapest places to eat within walking distance of SCAD.

Chipotle

Chipotle is located at 1745 Peachtree Street Northwest and is a “chain of build-your-own Mexican fare,” according to Google. Most menu selections are less than $10, even if you upgrade to extra meat or add avocado. I recommend the bowl with brown rice, chicken, sweet corn, lettuce and avocado. The bowl is a savvier option as opposed to a burrito because they’re easier to save for the next day as leftover food. At Chipotle you order and pay all at one station before sitting down, which makes it perfect for on the go.

Gusto

Looking for a healthier but equally cheap version of Chipotle? Look no further than a few more blocks down the street at 1935 Peachtree Road NE. At Gusto you can choose between healthy brown rice or mixed greens before topping it with protein, vegetables, and sauce all for $10 or less. That is unless you choose the shrimp as your protein which puts you slightly over $10, but hey it’s been a stressful school week so go ahead and splurge a little.

Mellow Mushroom

Mellow Mushroom is always a fan favorite. This pizza spot is located just down the street from SCAD at 1770 Peachtree Street NW and offers vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options in addition to the usual and extremely delicious classic pizza. Mellow Mushroom is a great place to get quality food for any diet on any budget. A small pizza is $12 ninety-nine cents, and you can’t go wrong with the House Special. If you’re wanting to get pizza but not the everyday pie, try the Great White or experiment with building your own.

Which Wich Superior Sandwiches

The older, prettier sister of Subway, Which Wich is a chain restaurant that allows customers to build the sandwich of their dreams. Located just across the interstate in Atlantic station, this sub shop offers you the chance to create your own sandwich, wrap or gyro, or select one from their menu. They also offer vegetarian options, and the Caprese sandwich is amazing.

Yumbii

With humble origins as a local Atlanta food truck, Yumbii’s iconic asian Mexican fusion cuisine now has a permanent location close to SCAD at 1927 Peachtree Rd. I recommend the taco combo which comes with two large tacos, their famous sesame fries and a drink for only $12. Support a local restaurant, eat quickly between classes and leave with money left to spare.

No matter your budget or dietary needs, there are places that can get you out of the rut you’ve gotten into at the Hub and doesn’t empty your pockets. Try new places and see what’s out there, because midtown is teeming with amazing eateries.
