The Royal Wedding Series is an eight-part series that highlights exceptional work by fashion journalists at SCAD Atlanta. The series was written entirely by students in Writing About Fashion and Fashion Writing courses, taught by Professor Linda Sherbert. The students were assigned to cover the royal wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Each piece was written from a unique perspective and style surrounding the topic of the historic royal wedding. If you would like to submit a work of fashion journalism, contact fashion@scadconnector.com.

From the Beckham’s to the Clooney’s, the royal wedding of Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle attracted celebrities both local and across the pond. Guests included co-stars from Meghan’s former television show “Suits,” to Hollywood royalty such as Oprah Winfrey, Carey Mulligan and Idris Elba with fiancée Sabrina Dhowre. George and Amal Clooney also arrived for the nuptials, held in a chapel at Windsor Castle. Priyanka Chopra, Abigail Spencer, Jessica Mulroney, Serena Williams and her husband and Alexis Ohanian were among Meghan’s closest friends at the wedding. Markus Anderson, a friend of both the bride and groom and the person who brought the couple together on a blind date, was present to see them take their vows.

Sir Elton John and his husband, David Furnish, also joined the fashionable festivities. After canceling two concerts in Las Vegas to attend the wedding, John performed four songs at the luncheon reception, which was hosted by Queen Elizabeth II at St. George’s Hall at Windsor Castle. He also performed at the evening reception, hosted by the father of the groom, Prince Charles, at Frogmore House. Unlike the luncheon, which was attended by 600 people, the private event in the evening was a much smaller, more intimate affair.

Of these celebrities, many of their fashions drew considerable attention. Mulligan appeared in a floral midi-dress by London-based Erdem. Winfrey and Amal Clooney were wearing bespoke dresses by British designer Stella McCartney, with elegant hats by other designers. Amal Clooney’s mustard-yellow dress paired with a yellow fascinator by Stephen Jones, was crowned the best-dressed guest at the wedding because her look was the most-searched online after the event.

The bride wore a modest custom gown by a British designer Clare Waight Keller, now artistic director at Givenchy, and then a long, flattering dress by Stella McCartney for the evening party.

Interestingly, the Duchess of Cambridge — who is known for wearing dresses from the house of Alexander McQueen including her wedding gown — recycled a pale yellow dress by Sarah Burton. Previously, Kate had worn  that same dress on two occasions: Princess Charlotte’s christening and the queen’s official birthday celebration, called Trooping the Colour, in 2016. Many observers speculated that she recycled the familiar look as a considerate gesture to Meghan, as Kate didn’t want to steal any of the attention away from the bride.
