Once again, the time has come for a favorited holiday of the year — Halloween. There’s so many great reasons to enjoy Halloween, and the entire month of October. For me, it’s the transition of the weather. Although Atlanta is still stuck in the mid 80s, every now and then we get a subtle breeze that sparks my hope of wearing cozy socks and oversized sweatshirts. There’s the constant stream of horror movies, which are to die for (pun intended). Also, what other excuse do you have to eat an entire year’s worth of candy in a matter of days? (If you have a good excuse, please email me.)

If you’re involved in any Halloween festivities, then you’re probably dressing up — whether it’s a costume party or trick-or-treating. Halloween is supposed to be a great holiday for everyone, but some take it too far when it comes to costumes. To be sensitive and empathetic to others and their cultures, traditions and identities, follow these tips on what to not wear on Halloween.

Blackface

Does this really need to be explained? Just don’t do it.

Anything involving religion

Let’s face it, religion is an extremely sensitive topic no matter how many denominations and belief systems exist. Certain religions don’t even celebrate Halloween, so it’s never a good idea to take something sacred to so many people and make it a costume.

Cultural clothing

Appropriating an entire culture is probably the worst offense. It’s never OK to wear a culture’s clothing as a costume. Cultural clothing has significant meaning to specific groups and is a part of their identity. It’s never funny, especially if the words “sexy” are involved. Don’t be that person.

Anything you’re unsure of

If you’re not sure whether or not your costume may be offensive, put yourself in the position of the person you think it may hurt. If you feel any negative connotation at all, it’s probably not a good idea. Trust your gut. If you don’t, then trust your friend’s gut.

Stay safe and have fun during this year’s Halloween!
