The 1988 “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” is a midnight movie classic, if ever there was one. Taking place in a small American town, this story follows a group of college students who encounter a strange alien race that resembles and acts like clowns. However, once it’s discovered these clowns have a taste for human flesh, it’s up to the students to find a way to get this show off the road.

Undeniably, the best aspect of the film are the clowns themselves. These guys steal the show whenever they’re on screen. Their grotesquely appealing design and kooky personalities make them fun to be around, but on top of that, the creativity behind their society is equally entertaining. From their insane popcorn guns, cotton candy sacks they hold their victims in and their acidic pies, there’s no shortage of unique toys for these bad boys to play with while running amok.

The story pays homage to the formula of B monster movies from the 1950s while maintaining a modern day aesthetic. “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” takes place all in one night, reminiscent of older films and their lack of budget to film during the day. Another example is the police officer Mooney, whose character plays on the classic stereotype of the cop who doesn’t believe in monsters going around to a hilariously absurd degree.

The entirety of the cast also calls back to films such as “The Blob,” where a group of young people get together to take down a monster in a small town. This is where the film goes downhill. The primary problem is that the main human characters, while not irritating, are nothing special. The main couple attempts to deliver some level of charisma and energy, but aren’t given much to do other than constantly repeat information back to the audience. Same goes for the supporting cast, except for the pair of ice cream truck drivers trying to pick up girls throughout the film — though they quickly lose their charm.

Nonetheless, it’s hard to go wrong with “Killer Klowns from Outer Space.” While it isn’t as absurd as other cult monster films, there’s no denying the entertainment value is still very high. There should be nothing stopping you from checking out this outrageous ride — unless you have an unhealthy fear of clowns.
