Last weekend, SCAD held its first virtual AnimationFEST. SCAD students and guests were able to access the festival through their laptops, tablets or mobile devices, giving them the full digital experience. The festival offered special screenings, insightful presentations and access to titans of animation. Take a read below of some of the events that took place.

SCAD Student Showcase

SCAD showcased their animation students’ work last Friday. Range of styles and techniques from films were all featured, where the students produced them entirely.

Women of Nickelodeon Animation Studio

The traditional male-dominated leadership model is being broken down over time, allowing room for more women to obtain these big decision-making roles in the making of programs, production, and development. The women who spoke during this event were Liz Paulson, senior vice president, casting and talent development; Darlene Caamaño Loquet, senior vice president, features development; Claudia Spinelli, senior vice president, current series development; Kari Kim, vice president, current series development; Kelley Gardner, vice president, current series development.

‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’

Viewers at the festival got to watch an episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender followed by an episode of the show’s successor, the Legend of Korra. Later on that day, the festival hosted Bryan Konietzko, the creator of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and held a live audience conversation and Q&A with him.

In Conversation: Everett Downing Jr., Director of ‘Hair Love’

The director of the award-winning film, Hair Love discusses the evolution of his film, the importance of short-form filmmaking, and how his work as a storyteller fuels his activism.
