Ayanis released a music video for “Blues” off her EP “Yani” last month.

“Blues,” in comparison to the artist’s other work, is stripped back, honest and soulful. Not that her others aren’t honest, but they do feel more appropriate to play at a friend’s birthday party rather than on a romantic date.

The Texas-Atlanta artist — at this point you can say she is Atlanta-based, but you see her Southern roots in all of her work — has been working on her musical career since 2017, and it shows. When her EP “Direction,” was released in 2018, she found herself on her first major tour. In 2019, she landed Wiz Khalifa on her song “One Night,” and everything changed from there. If Ayanis is not a household name now, she is definitely on her way.

The artist has worked with some well-known acts such as Jack Harlow, Queen Naija and Big Latto. Not to mention, Ayanis’s videos with these artists are fantastic. Even if you don’t like her music, the visuals to accompany them are quite dynamic and feel as if you’re at a concert, with her choreography, outfits and makeup. If you’re invested, Ayanis’s Instagram page is full of behind-the-scenes glances of the intricate process she goes through with her team to make the videos.

But back to “Blues.” Whenever a new artist comes to the scene, music fanatics look for different things to latch onto — whether it be the artist’s style, lyrics or sound. Ayanis, to say the least, was no different. Each one of her tracks is a variation of upbeat pop with R&B sprinkled throughout. “Blues” maintains that consistency, but introduces a more vulnerable side to the artist. “Blues” could be seen as Ayanis introducing us to her versatility, which we can expect to see more of in the future.

“Blues” is a warm and inviting track, and with lyrics like, “And that’s comfortable/Commitment issue/Fall in love you lose/Careful what I chose,” it might make you rethink relationships.
