With fall approaching, we are going back to school and hopefully returning to some semblance of normalcy. Fall at SCAD is always a very exciting time as students return and our classes start, but I am really excited for all the fashion events coming up this season. From the return of the Met Gala to the wrapping up of the “Sex and the City” reboot, the last few months of this year are going to be very exciting for the fashion world.

Met Gala

Fashion lovers were devastated when the Met Gala was canceled in 2020, and then the 2021 Met Gala was postponed. The Met Gala is held every year on the first Monday in May and is a celebration of that year’s costume exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Celebrities of all kinds come together in New York, dressing to the theme of the exhibition. This is the Super Bowl and Academy Awards all wrapped up in one for the fashion world, and every year celebrities outdo themselves. This year, the gala has been postponed to September 13 and is taking on the theme of “American Fashion.” Vogue reported that “Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in charge of the Costume Institute, felt it was important to reexamine American identity and fashion, especially as it has changed over the last several years due to both political and social justice movements.” This event is always a very exciting time and brings about new trends and fashion icons. Designers get to have fun and their creativity soars to new heights. This year’s Met will be smaller as it will have 450 guests, compared to the usual 600, but I am excited nonetheless.

“House of Gucci”

Lady Gaga is making her return to the silver screen with her new movie, “House of Gucci.” The film is based on the book, “The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed” by Sara Gay Forden. The movie is directed by Ridley Scott and has an all-star cast, including Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Al Pacino, Jared Leto and Jeremy Irons. The movie is set to release on November 26, which also happens to be Gucci’s 100th anniversary. GQ best explains the plot, stating, “’House Of Gucci’ follows the marriage of Patrizia Reggiani and Maurizio Gucci, the heir to Guccio Gucci’s fashion house. In 1985, after 12 years of marriage, Gucci traded in Reggiani for a younger woman and in 1995 was assassinated by a hired hitman on the steps of his office in Italy. The film is based on the lead-up to the trial of Reggiani, who was accused and imprisoned following the murder. Naturally, the tabloids across the world were gripped and Reggiani became known as the ‘Black Widow.’ Reggiani served 18 years behind bars before being released in 2016 on good behavior,” (Maoui, GQ). The cast and crew of this film are incredible, and I have very high expectations for this film. The story is gripping and juicy and will leave the audience even more fascinated by this incredible fashion house.

“Sex and the City” Reboot

“Sex and the City” solidified the need for incredible fashion on TV. This show lets us in on the fabulous, fashionable and sexy lives of Manhattan women. It romanticized New York for us and dealt with topics that were previously taboo. After the series finale, we got two very fun movies that chronicled the characters’ lives as time went on. Every fashion lover has a soft spot for this show, whether or not they watched it in its entirety. This show is set to come back for a 10 episode reboot and it will be titled “Just Like That.” All the characters are returning besides Kim Cattrell, who played the fan-favorite Samantha. The reboot will be airing on HBO Max, and the release date is unknown. Though this show will probably not be ready by the end of the year, it should finish filming by December, which means we will get this show at the beginning of next year. The few pictures we have seen from the show have me so excited! The characters have remained true to their personal fashion choices, but they are updated for 2021. I cannot wait for the gang to get back together and bring smiles to our faces.

This fall looks to be very promising for all fashion enthusiasts, and I have high expectations for all three things listed above. Let us see what the last couple of months in 2021 has in store!
