Shooting for SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film this summer was a lot of work and a lot of fun. In college, you seldom get opportunities to do what you love and get paid for it. This time, I was photographing one-of-a-kind shoes made by Chris Francis, an artist based in Los Angeles, for the exhibition “Form & Function: Shoe Art by Chris Francis.” His shoes are all thematic, and conversational. Many of his inspirations come from artistic movements such as brutalism, constructivism and Bauhaus. I had to create some visuals using a very clean bright style, so this side of the job wasn’t creatively challenging.

On the other hand, this enabled me to work on my technical skills. Replicating the same framing and maintaining consistency with the lighting required effort due to the number of different materials Francis used in the shoes.

Overall, I really enjoyed learning about Francis and his interests through the shoes. It was an honor to meet him and work with him. If you haven’t seen the exhibition yet, I highly recommend seeing them in person!
