My name is Chelsea D Henderson, a second-year photography student. I’m 20-years-old and I’m from Queens, New York — just like Spider-Man. I started venturing into photography around the 7th grade. My initial goal was to work in the fashion industry and be a fashion designer, but I soon realized that I had a strong hatred for drawing. So, I transferred from a drawing class to a photography class and never looked back.

As I got older, I learnt more about photography and practiced by taking pictures of friends and family and it soon became my life. Over the years I’ve also realized people don’t give photographers enough credit, because “all they do is snap a picture.” In reality, there’s so much more to it, photographers are involved with editing and even printing.

To me photography isn’t just about taking a picture, it’s about creating a moment. And as corny as it sounds, moments in pictures last a lifetime. My favorite type of photography is commercial photography and since I was interested in fashion at a young age and it’s safe to say that most of my inspiration comes from streetwear culture; I’m heavily influenced by Jerry Lorenzo and Jade and Grant Goulden. I reference their fashion look books to draw inspiration when I have the dreaded “artist’s block.”

After SCAD, I hope to work in the streetwear industry as an editorial fashion photographer. Wanting to make my mark in a male-dominated industry is what drives me to do my best. To other artists out there the best advice I can give is to allow yourself to grow, don’t worry about what others are doing and don’t worry if you don’t think you’re good enough. Your main purpose in life is to learn and grow.
