SCAD Atlanta’s Black Student Association (BSA) celebrates Black History Month with the theme, “Black Legends: Remembering the Legacies Throughout Black History,” in this new year and new decade. With events planned in the third week of February, BSA dedicates every evening of this week to follow the theme of remembering the past legacies that have shaped us today and would in the future.

“During black history month, BSA celebrates a week full of events that celebrate and educates the amazing history of black people,” said Mia Daniels, the president of the club. Every night, different executive board members of the club will host a night to gather the members of the club and those who attend SCAD to join together and celebrate.

Bria Evans, a second-year film and television student said, “I’m excited to see the range of events we’ve got .”

Here are the events for each day of BSA Week.

Monday, Feb. 17: Legacy Night –  Tribute to Kobe Bryant

Join us as we watch the Lakers’ tribute to Kobe Bryant and discuss the impact of his life on others. Following the tribute is a discussion on the responsibility black people have (or do not have) to live for others, what makes a person a legacy and how we are living today to leave a legacy for tomorrow.

Tuesday, Feb. 18: Black Jeopardy Night

“Black Jeopardy” is a well-known Saturday Night Live sketch where traditional Jeopardy categories take a light and humorous spin by focusing on black lifestyle, culture and more. For a night of fun and laughter, they will celebrate black culture through BSA’s version of “Black Jeopardy.”

Wednesday, Feb. 19: Red Table Talk

Inspired by Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield-Norris’ web television talk show of the same name, BSA will discuss serious topics such as confronting mental illness as black men, white privilege, being black and queer, police brutality, and so on.

Thursday, Feb. 20: Member Showcase Night

An assortment of artistic pieces will be displayed to showcase the talents of the members and what they have created and accomplished so far. With a style of a gallery setting where we explore the amazing work of our very own, students will have the opportunity to express their art with their friends, members of the club and more.

Friday, Feb. 21: Movie Night

We will watch the movie, “The Hate You Give” directed by George Tillman Jr., and discuss how it relates to black culture of today and the past.

The events planned are not only for celebrating Black History Month, but also building a community for blacks to connect with one another and build bonds through activities that help me voice their opinions, but interact with one another.
