The “Photographer of the week” series is dedicated to highlighting photographers within the SCAD community that demonstrate unique abilities behind the lens. This week, Addison Rudicile, a second-year film student shares her recent projects and personal insight.

When did you start your photography journey and what does photography mean to you?

The first time I really started getting into photography was the summer going into my freshman year of high school. Anytime I’m taking a photo, my goal is to capture life’s best moments. Whether that’s senior photos, a wedding, hiking in the dark for sunrise — whatever it might be. Enjoying the moment is one thing, but to able to go back and relive the moment through a photograph is another.

Where do you attain your inspiration for your work?

Lots of places! I love watching photographers and videographers on YouTube, people like Peter Mckinnon, Drew Simms, Matti Haapoji, Becky and Chris and so many more. I also love getting inspiration through Pinterest. It helps spark ideas and also helps me find my color palette/aesthetic I’m going for.

What is your creative process like per shoot?

It honestly varies on the shoot. Typically I make a board on Pinterest or I’ll look at some of the boards I’ve made to get ideas. Then depending on what the shoot is how I go about my creative process. If I’m doing portraits, I try to capture people genuine expression and their personality. If I’m doing landscape then it’s all about planning accordingly. Then once I’ve planned my shoot, I try to get creative with framing the shot. Finally, post production, I love messing with presets I made in Lightroom as a starting point and then twisting it up from there.

What impact do you want to have on the industry?

I want to be a light in the darkest places! I want to spread positivity, love, passion. When we spread happiness and joy to others around us, it creates an amazing atmosphere that makes the process even more enjoyable.

What project(s) are you currently working on?

Currently, I am finishing up editing photos from a wedding I did March as well as prepping for two more weddings in May. I’m also currently in the inspiration stage of some personal projects I want to do before heading back home for the summer.

Is there any advice you’d like to leave to other aspiring photographers or SCAD students?

The most important advice to give is follow your dreams and stay true to yourself! There will be times were people will challenge your values, your passion and your faith, but you can’t let that stop you. The second most important advice I can give is to not be afraid of who you are or trying something new. If you are constantly afraid of what others might think or say about you or your work, you will never have the chance to grow. The final advice I would give is to put yourself out there and take chances. The industry is all about making connections. You never know where those connections could lead you. Dream big, stay true to yourself, work hard and never give up!
