Spring in the Gardens

If you have a bad case of spring fever and want to spend some time outside, what better place than a garden … or seven gardens? In their 33-acre space, the Atlanta History Center boasts of no less than seven gardens, ranging from the Smith Farm Garden, the Rhododendron Garden, the Asian Garden, and the Quarry Garden to the formal symmetry of the Swan House Gardens. Catherine Ramsdell, Ph.D. and professor Astin Shrader will be leading students through an inspirational journey of the senses, sparking expressions in both visual art and written word. Bring comfortable walking shoes, phone or camera for photos, sketchbooks or journals. Bus transportation to the Atlanta History Center and entrance tickets will be provided. Click here to register.

Becoming a Corporate Visual Stylist

Professor Sewell explores the role of corporate visual stylist and the various industries that employ them around the world. Life Drawing at the Atlanta Zoo
Friday, May 14, 1-3 p.m.
Joined renowned Disney animator Gregg Azzopardi as he guides students through the process of capturing form and motion in both birds and beasts at the Atlanta Zoo. The practice of drawing animals from life has always been key to the success of Disney’s anthropomorphic designs. Professor Azzopardi will guide participants through a variety of live drawing scenarios designed to improve every aspect of character and creature illustration. Meet at the 1600 main building exit. Long pose Life Drawing 1
Friday, May 14, 1-3 p.m.
Learn how to create form and movement from light and shadow surrounding the figure and how to transform your unique perspective into a magical expression. Experiment by drawing with mediums such as charcoal and conte crayon to achieve outstanding results. This is a good opportunity for students in all majors. Supplies needed by participants: drawing charcoal paper (24X36 Strathmore or BFK Rives/Arches),  measuring stick, graphite pencils (or conte crayon/willow charcoals/charcoal pencils), kneaded rubber erasers, and white erasers. Making a figure pop in Sculpture
Friday, May 14, 1-3 p.m.
Students will observe in real time a figure and/or abstract form modeled in clay and be shown different ways to make the form “POP” with punched lights and darks creating greater contrast in the anatomy to achieve greater expression and emphasis. Supplies needed by participants: students are able to bring in individual figures/forms in clay to apply the method to their own form. Click here to register.

Weaving Textiles
Friday, May 14, 4-6 p.m.
Students will learn how to make basic and experimental weaves using a hand loom. Supplies needed by participants: cardboard box, yarns, ribbons, and/or anything to weave with. Click here to register.

In this time of personal health awareness, the Well Building Standard is the new “Must Know” system. This inspiring certification system focuses on wellness. We will explore the interior design optimizations of this extensive standard and share information on preparing for their WELL accreditation examinations. Street Art: Making Your Mark
