For the photographers at SCAD, it is easy to see that one could blindly point their viewfinder in any direction while in the city of Atlanta and get a spectacular photo. Atlanta is one of the most photographic cities — and the artists here know it. The community celebrates this by encouraging a city-wide admiration for photography. That is why it is important, not only for photographers, but for those who want to know Atlanta better, to attend this year’s Atlanta Celebrates Photography (ACP) as they celebrate their 20th year.

ACP is a series of events spread throughout the months of September, October and November. Without spending a penny this weekend, you can see the brilliant work of many artists, photographers and activists. There are 100 free events to attend through ACP.

Aside from the lecture series and gallery shows, ACP is hosting portfolio reviews, photo battles and artist talks. SCAD Atlanta is hosting the “Rebel Rebel” exhibition gallery show from Sept. 27 to Nov. 2. The show features fashion photography by SCAD students and alumni.

In appreciation of the beauty of Atlanta cityscape that so many photographers love to capture, ACP created an outdoor installation project called “The Fence,” the largest public photo exhibition in North America. Located at the Piedmont Dog Park, the exhibition showcases the works of Daniel Edwards, Raymond McCrea Jones, Dale Niles and many more. This event will end Nov. 1 and is free to attend. For more information, check out their page here.

Another way to celebrate the historic and artistic world of Atlanta photography is to view the “A Race Against Time: Saving Atlanta’s Photographic History” exhibition. The six collections will go on display at Georgia State University and showcase the hard work of photographic preservation. This is free to attend and will be available to see from Sept. 23 to July 1. More information about the event can be found here.

The crowning glory of this three-month festival happens on Nov. 29 —  famed photographer Annie Leibovitz will be speaking at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. This presentation coincides with the publication of the extended version of “Annie Leibovitz: At Work.” Tickets can be purchased here.

From local to international, every kind of photographer will bring their work to Atlanta and help the city celebrate this changing medium. To learn more about all of the different events you can attend, free or not, visit acpinfo.org.

Enjoy the wonderful world of photography, go with your photography friends and find out more about the art world. You are bound to be inspired by all ACP has to offer this fall.
