SCADstyle

Next week, fashion enthusiasts are going to be graced by an iconic fashion designer who impacts how we view and perceive fashion. On Tuesday, April 9 at 5:30 p.m., SCADstyle will be hosting a keynote conversation with Greek designer, Mary Katrantzou. She will share information about her creations and iconic garments, as well as her path to being recognized in the fashion industry.

Following the event, SCAD FASH will host an opening reception at 6:30 p.m. Her work in the industry will be celebrated with the long-awaited exhibition, “Kaleidoscope Katrantzou: Mary Katrantzou, 10 Years in Fashion,”  where viewers will be able to indulge in her world and vision.

This exhibition is a vast display of how she creates garments with bold colors and mixes them with prints and textures. Katrantzou is known for mixing technology in her looks, adding innovating details and joining unlike aesthetics to achieve a new world of fresh and elegant femininity.

The talk and the upcoming exhibition are highly anticipated. Rocio Choi, third-year fashion student said, “It is a privilege to be able to have a resource like SCAD FASH while at school. As someone who is pursuing a fashion design career, being able to learn about different aspects of fashion hand in hand is a must. SCAD FASH allows me to have the right exposure to the industry and push my imagination with every exhibition. I’m very excited to experience the upcoming exhibition by Mary Katrantzou, who is known for pushing the fashion industry by fusing it with technology, and see how her designs will further inform my work.”

The London-based designer studied architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design where she graduated with a B.A. in textile design and later obtained a M.A. in fashion at Central Saint Martins in London. During her graduation show in 2008, Katrantzou used the trompe l’oeil technique in to created prints of oversized jewelry and incorporates them as a design on jersey-bonded dresses.

She was recognized as the “Queen of Print” by the industry, for the way she renovated twenty-first century fashion by becoming an inspiration for the practice and the fashion industry’s professionals. Print plays a large part of Katrantzou’s work. She stated, “Digital print allows me to experiment with print in a way that fine art and other methods could not. It opens up a huge spectrum for possibility; I can create possibility out of impossibility, surrealism out of realism and both vice versa.”

The garments she produces emphasize a feminine aura and are effectively reflected in the women Katrantzou has been able to dress. From First Lady Michelle Obama to actress Lupita Nyong’o and model Naomi Campbell, the designer has nurtured a significant following.
