The “Artist of the Week” series is dedicated to highlighting artist and designers within the SCAD community that demonstrate unique abilities within their major. This week, Deanna, a third-year interior design student, shares her recent projects and personal insight.

What got you interested in interior design?

Interior design has a power to change multitudes. Through this change, many outcomes shine and prosper. The intensity of the change that applied design has in a space is what drew me into the field.

What is the main source of your inspiration and where does it come from?

Art is found within the simplest of realms. As a design enthusiast from a young age, the way that function produces as a result of form inspired me to pursue a future in interior design.

What is your process like when designing?

When designing I base my ideas off the function of the space, taking it all in. What will it be used for? Who will be using it? Where does this design fit into daily life?

What would you say is the most challenging part about your major and how do you overcome that challenge?

The most challenging part about my major is managing technicalities and software. To manage this, I partake in extra help sessions and tutoring.

How does your minor in advertising art direction compliment your interior design major?

In the future, I intend on opening my own interior design studio. A minor in advertising art direction would provide me with the tools I need to fulfillingly manage the creative process within my studio.

What is something you wish you knew before getting into interior design?

Before getting into interior design, I wish I knew the difficulty in rendering technical designs.

What would you like the accomplish in the future after graduating?

Following graduation, I would like to open my studio, Labash Studios, and hire interior designers to work for and with me on oncoming projects. Following graduation, I would like to pursue a higher education in a European country to broaden my horizons. In addition, I would like to intern for interior designers to gain further experience in the field. One day, with my education and experience, I would love the oppurtunity to move forward and take my own step in the world of interior development.

Do you have any advice for other Interior Design majors or SCAD students in general?

Interior design students should focus on the art of the design itself, rather than the complexities that forthcome it. By focusing on the idea that art is where all ideas stem from, the rest will come naturally.
